I have a fantastic opportunity with a client based in Newport who due to increased productivity are recruiting for an experienced Applications Engineer. This is a business that supplies to various industries such as aerospace, defence, automotive, power generation and oil & gas to name a few.

As Applications Engineer you will support the production process and Engineering function through utilising your knowledge to develop production and process improvements. Ideally you will have previous experience of working on new projects, new products, and applications throughout each phase of development.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for the process development of new applications and production parts. This will involve working closely with customers and the sales team, from enquiry stage through to production and delivery of components.
  • Develop expertise in robotic programming and an in-depth coating knowledge through shop floor experience and training.
  • Ensuring that all aspects of work are documented enabling production to control the subsequent processing of parts, drawings, process routes, tooling information and suppliers consumable reorder details.
  • Produce process documentation as it develops to ensure that process instructions are clear, accurate and updated.
  • Become part of a larger team, utilising the experience of the coating technicians to enable process refinements to be made (this will involve maintaining dialogue with shop floor personnel to identify to identify processing difficulties they experience and to provide an effective solution to their concerns).
  • You will become competent in the key aspects of the coating technician and production assistant’s role, selecting & monitoring process parameters, setting up jobs/equipment, loading and unloading of parts, preparing appropriate tooling and masking, degreasing, masking techniques and surface activation.
  • Take responsibility for inspection and control of the first production parts processed, up to the point where the process route has been established and handed over to production.
  • Develop an in-depth process knowledge that will enable you to troubleshoot process problems.
  • Carry out in depth contract reviews including various levels of customer/ industry specifications, part drawings and customer specific requirements.
  • Accept commercial responsibilities in relation to projects with respect to tooling costs, process times and material consumption.
  • Good housekeeping of own work area and contribute to the general upkeep of the working environment.

Qualifications, skills and experience required.

  • Degree level or equivalent in applicable discipline
  • A Level Science
  • GCSE English, Maths and Science
  • ERP Software experience
  • Robot programming is desirable.
  • General Engineering
  • Thermal Metal Spray experience
