This Mechanical Design Manager role is a LOCAL role based in Nottingham with excellent perks and benefits.

The role will cover Nottingham and surrounding areas, ensuring you are always working within a manageable distance from your home.

You will be joining a well-established nationwide M&E contractor with additional FM and Fire and Security divisions. The company's work primarily involves Design & Build projects, focusing on logistics facilities, with expertise also in education, leisure, office facilities, and manufacturing.

On site, you will be responsible for overseeing the mechanical design process, from pre-tender to post-tender stages. This includes liaising with clients, developing tender opportunities, managing the tender process, and ensuring the delivery of efficient and effective design solutions.

Pre-Tender Period:

  • Liaise with Commercial Director and other directors/managers about future tender opportunities.
  • Develop tender opportunities with existing and new clients.
  • Assist clients with budget costs and high-level schemes, advising on different options.
  • Develop design briefs/specifications with clients.
  • Assess the suitability of tender opportunities based on various factors, including project type, client, value, and location.

Tender/Post-Tender Period:

  • Manage the tender process and deliverables with the Commercial Director and estimators.
  • Assess tender information and manage RFIs, including client liaison.
  • Develop principal design elements/systems for D&B tenders.
  • Produce 2-stage tender reports and submissions, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
  • Liaise with the Contracts Director for input on programming.
  • Prepare for and attend mid-tender interviews as required.
  • Adjudicate final tender design and costings with the estimator and Contracts Director.
  • Manage the post-tender process, including queries, addendums, and technical appraisals.

Design Delivery:

  • Ensure an efficient and effective handover between estimating and design.
  • Set up the contract design process, deliverables, and management with design engineers.
  • Develop any beneficial value engineering (VE).
  • Liaise and coordinate with electrical designers.
  • Monitor design progress and oversee design and drawing production.
  • Attend design team meetings with the client team.
  • Ensure necessary builder's work details are provided on time.
  • Lead services coordination with the building fabric and other services.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, including Part L and EPC.
  • Monitor estimation design against actual design.
  • Manage design variations instigated by the client team and advise on cost and effect.
  • Ensure an efficient and effective handover between design and contracting departments.

Other Associated Duties:

  • Survey existing sites and systems, developing upgrade schemes and reports.
  • Solve any client design and pricing issues pre or post-contract.
  • Approve any changes to design drawings proposed by the contracting team.
  • Assist in design changes during the contract period due to client changes.
  • Agree on subcontract design order content prior to placing orders and sign off subcontract design and estimation invoices.
