£76,229/annum car and 3% bonus

Reporting to the Lead Commissioning Engineer, you will primarily be based in the Colchester and EPN License Area offices.


As a Commissioning Engineer, your main responsibility will be to plan and perform commissioning testing of various substation equipment at all voltage levels, following the current procedures. You will also provide design and standards support, as well as witness manufacturers' commissioning tests to ensure quality assurance and compliance.
To be successful in this role, you will need a relevant engineering degree or a Higher National HNC/HND qualification. Experience as an Authorised Person (AP) with network operational experience, including a period as a commissioning engineer, is required. Additionally, you should have a high level of technical understanding and proficiency in the field, with the ability to apply practical engineering principles to problem-solving. Strong IT skills are also necessary for interacting with complex relay schemes and analysing results.



Key Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure safety management throughout all tasks and promote a zero harm philosophy.
  2. Plan and manage commissioning work and plant acceptance testing, leading to safe energisation and successful project completion.
  3. Develop commissioning plans and programmes, applying sound engineering knowledge to set standards and ensure thorough and complete testing.
  4. Evaluate designs during design reviews, collaborating with in-house, contractor, and supplier experts to optimize schemes and reduce risk.
  5. Apply software programmable logic and settings to protection schemes, making adjustments as required.
  6. Diagnose problems during commissioning testing and propose modifications to scheme designs to ensure desired operability.
  7. Investigate and correct malfunctions during the lifespan of equipment, collaborating with senior commissioning engineers and technical experts to develop permanent solutions.
  8. Work with Network Control to plan and authorize safe energisation of plant on the network.
  9. Minimize customer interruptions and ensure commissioning schemes deliver lower numbers of Customer Minutes Lost (CML) and Customer Interruptions (CI).
  10. Witness contractors' testing and coordinate the use of test sheets and test routines.
  11. Confirm relay settings back into the company database before energisation and ensure completion of as-built records.


Job Requirements:

  • Relevant engineering degree or Higher National HNC/HND qualification.
  • Network operational experience as an Authorised Person (AP), including a period as a commissioning engineer.
  • High level of technical understanding and proficiency in commissioning.
  • Strong IT skills for interacting with complex relay schemes and analyzing results.
  • Ability to lead site-based teams diplomatically and understand conflicting viewpoints to reach optimal solutions.
