Looking for a Senior Engineer with Track (Pway) Design experience to work for the Client Organisation (High Speed Two Ltd) responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK.  Working within the specialist Track Alignment Team within the Chief Engineer’s group.

The Senior Track Alignment Engineer provides technical and professional support for Track Engineering, developing standards and technical requirements for the discipline. They provide assurance that design and construction of track meets project requirements and work to resolve issues where appropriate.

Working within the Central Engineering Group (Chief Engineer’s group) whom set the technical specifications for engineering disciplines as technical authority on the high Speed Project including Track / Pway which will enable high speed trains travel at 400 kph.  HS2 has awarded four Track Systems contracts for the design and installation of the track – HS2 is keeping a hands on approach in terms of pway design and assuring these designs to ensure continuity and as they are using Slab Track solution the alignment has to be right first time because its hard to move once the concrete has set!

The successful candidates must have:

  • The key element is must be proficient with Track / Pway Design both plain line and switching & crossing – although you are working for the client and so not responsible for producing the designs you need to be able to ensure and assure the design produced by the contracting teams & their consultants’ are correct and where necessary propose amendments.
  • Have experience and knowledge with the Track design software – Bently Power Rail or one of the previous additions of the software (Bentley Rail track / Inrail or MX).
  • Good knowledge of track gauging
  • Capable to contribute and be an author of the Track Standards
  • Have Commercial awareness to drive best value.

Work Situation – Hybrid

The office location is Birmingham Snowhill or London Euston (your choice) they operate a flexible hybrid working model with plans to be working 2 days a week from the office.  Overall, this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can.

Birmingham                  £65 – 71,160.00 + Pen (6:12) + health + 25 days (Potentially up to £74,718)

London                         £75 – 80,760+ Pen (6:12) + health + 25 days (Potentially up to £84,000)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support development of requirements, specifications and standards which deliver track alignment such that they meet HS2 objectives and mitigate environmental impacts, within the programme budget;
  • Provide technical expertise and advice relating to the track alignment to both the wider organisation and external stakeholders as required;
  • Support in assuring that the design for track alignment on the HS2 Railway is configured and installed in accordance with standards and technical requirements and where necessary support in resolving issues in accordance with HS2 Technical Standards and Procedures;
  • Support engagement and consultation with internal teams impacted by the track alignment design, particularly Infrastructure Management and Systems Delivery teams, ensuring that all relevant systems and sub-systems are considered providing a holistic approach;
  • Develop and implement the use of best practice and innovative engineering techniques, technologies and processes, driving consistency and helping to identify opportunities for efficiencies across Phase 1 and Phase 2 delivery teams;

Required Criteria

The key criteria is that you have strong Track / Pway Design experience both plain line or switching and crossing, coupled with knowledge of Track Alignment design software Bentley Power Rail (or older versions).  You will have good knowledge of Track gauging be able to author track standards and have commercial awareness. Open to applicants with consultant, client or contractor experience but must have hands on design experience.

Skills:

  • Able to provide specialist technical support and leadership on discipline-specific scientific, technical and engineering principles to project development / delivery teams.
  • Capable of being a Standard Owner, working under the guidance of the Standard Discipline Owner.
  • Able to provide technical, commercial management and leadership skills to support project development / delivery teams, working under supervision of line manager (or delegate).
  • Ability to communicate most discipline-specific technical ideas to colleagues, based largely on examples of application.
  • Ability to apply many principles relating to standards, safety and the environment and able to articulate the rest.
  • Ability to apply principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understands the approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation and knowing when to seek guidance from other Subject Matter Experts or others.

Knowledge:

  • Chartered Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience – Not essential
  • Useful but not essential:
    • Applicable UK construction regulations including CDM requirement
    • The application of the Common Safety Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment.
  • Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2
  • Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements.

Type of experience:

  • Experience in managing multi-disciplinary engineering and safety standards, activity on large complex major projects/ programmes within a complex infrastructure delivery programme.
  • Experience of managing competing project and engineering demands, with cost and schedule implications.
