What does the role look like?

We are seeking a Senior Electronics Engineer to join our esteemed Global Defence Systems Value Stream located in Wolverhampton. In this pivotal role, you will spearhead the application of electronic system expertise within a dynamic, multi-disciplinary engineering team.

Your primary responsibilities will encompass diverse facets including support for new business acquisition, facilitation of new product introduction (NPI), advancement of novel technology, maintenance of production continuity, and comprehensive investigation of root-cause failures.

With a focus on NPI, you will play a central role in driving the conception, evolution, and scrutiny of cutting-edge circuit solutions tailored for products predominantly housing electronic control mechanisms for electric motor actuation systems. These systems are engineered to thrive in the rigors of demanding military aerospace environments.

What will your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

  • Perform detailed design, construction, testing, and analysis of electronic circuits for new products, ensuring alignment with available technology, in-service reliability, cost, and schedule considerations.
  • Architect electronic products, including the development of their overall structure.
  • Apply Common Circuit Blocks (CCBs) to new products, adhering to Collins Actuation Systems Electronics Strategy.
  • Create comprehensive electronics design definition documentation, elucidating the design solution and its underlying rationale.
  • Develop test plans to facilitate system integration and verification.
  • Conceptualize electronics solutions for bids and proposals.
  • Direct and conduct electronics fault investigations to the component level promptly.
  • Identify and justify suitable alternative components for obsolete component replacement via the Collins Change Management process.
  • Provide support for test equipment specification, procurement, and validation.
  • Review and evaluate electronics data from suppliers, including proposals and test reports.
  • Formulate electronics sub-system specifications.
  • Generate high-quality engineering reports.
  • Deliver presentations, both written and verbal, to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute as a member of a multifunctional integrated product team (IPT) responsible for project delivery.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams across different Collins locations.
  • Contribute to the development of Standard Work in electronics and share best practices within the Collins team.

What will you bring to the role?

Essential skills:

  • Advanced Circuit Design: Expertise in electronic circuit design for new products, considering technology, reliability, and cost.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Efficiently diagnose and resolve electronics faults to component level, ensuring timely issue resolution.
  • Effective Communication: Strong verbal and written communication abilities, collaborating effectively within teams and presenting technical information to diverse stakeholders.

Desirable skills:  

  • Experience in aerospace or a similar safety-critical industry is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of the electronic component supply chain and certification standards is desirable.
  • Familiarity with industry best practices is preferred.
  • Strong hardware design skills in Electronic Engineering, with proficiency in complex analysis, are essential.
  • Familiarity with electronic control of brushless DC motors is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of power electronics and power supply design is desirable.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability.
  • Self-motivated, with a proactive approach and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively.
