Based at our offices in Leeds with travel across our network

We have an exciting opportunity for a Functional Safety Engineer to join our team where you will develop and manage the functional safety process within the organisation to deliver exceptional performance alongside ensuring that legislative and license requirements in relation to gas and technical safety are fully met.  This role will cover both gas transmission and distribution assets across Northern Gas Networks (NGN) area of operations.

Your key accountabilities and responsibilities
•    Provide monitoring, assurance, technical advice and support to the wider business
•    Develop, manage and report on the Functional Safety Management System and develop and update policies and procedures for compliance with relevant legislation and codes of practice 
•    Work with the business to ensure adequate controls, systems, policies and procedures are in place to minimise the risk of functional safety incidents / accidents and protect people from the effects of incidents / accidents to ensure that risk is as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP)
•    Ensure compliance with the NGN Safety Case in relation to risk assessment and risk mitigation
•    Manage the provision of specialist functional safety, support, measurement, assurance and audit activities to the business and manage and assist in the investigation of process and asset related incidents and provide reports to internal department and HSE, in accordance with legislation, license conditions and internal procedures
•    Identify, raise and provide ongoing status monitoring / updates on and functional safety related risks and issues as appropriate

What skills and experience are we are looking for
•    Appropriate experience of major accident hazards and associated risk assessment techniques (e.g. HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA etc.) and technical / engineering control measures
•    Excellent analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to innovate and develop technical solutions to complex problems
•    Strong risk assessment / management experience and knowledge of appropriate safety and risk-related tools
•    Can develop functional safety lifecycle documents to high standard including Safety Requirement Specifications, Functional Safety Management Plans, Failure Data Reports, PFD calculation reports (using software packages for the calculations), SIF Registers and Verification documents
•    Previous experience with initiating and maintaining strategic relationships both internally and externally, using strong influencing skills to achieve business goals
•    Higher National Certificate (or higher qualification) in an appropriate engineering discipline and TuV Rhineland approved Functional Safety Engineer (SIS) or equivalent
•    Working knowledge and experience in functional safety lifecycle activities across the breadth of the BS EN 61511 or BS EN 61508 functional safety lifecycle
