TQR are working exclusively with an International Manufacturer to recruit an Operations Manager at their site based in Plymouth. In this role, the successful candidate will lead, organise and improve Operations activities at the site, including Production, Manufacturing, Process Development, Process Setting and Packing. You will be working as part of the Site Operations Management Team to ensure the efficient, economic and timely production of the full manufactured product range, whilst ensuring effective employee engagement and alignment. This is a pivotal role within the business, developing a culture of ‘Safety First’ whilst maximising manufacturing efficiency and product quality to always ensure customer satisfaction, mobilising site operations strategy to transform systems, processes and people to ensure customer satisfaction and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety:

  • Responsible for the Health and Safety of yourself and others. Leading focus on Health & Safety methods in the manufacturing areas and taking a proactive part in benchmarking best practice and suggesting improvements.
  • Ensuring a safe working environment for all employees and visitors on site and influencing a positive ‘Safety First’, ‘Can Do’ culture.

Quality:

  • Responsible for direct in-process quality checks in accordance with defined methods and work instructions to maintain the required quality standards/expectations for customers.
  • Responsible for ensuing timely route cause is established in the event of Non-conformance via 8D process and implement corrective actions to ensure prevention of re-occurrence.

Delivery:

  • To lead the Manufacturing function on site, ensuring effective control and development of systems, processes and staff.
  • Ensuring the development of manufacturing processes, manufacturing systems / technologies and human resources to continuously exceed the expectations of our customers and stakeholders.
  • Co-ordinating effective communication to stakeholders on performance of process trials and manufacturing processes.
  • Supporting the activities of service providers (e.g. maintenance, Supply Chain and Toolroom) as they interface with manufacturing activities.
  • Ensuring effective monitoring and support of process performance, including OEE (availability, quality and cycle), material efficiency, labour efficiency, RFT Manufacturing Quality Performance, Plan Adherence.
  • Supporting and coaching staff in Problem Solving, Continuous improvement and Lean techniques to address processing problems.
  • Ensuring effective and regular communication with staff and peers to ensure priorities are clear and to minimise disruption to the manufacturing process.
  • To Develop real-time performance measurement, communication and visual management systems to maximise manufacturing performance.
  • Synchronise operational improvement efforts with the Site Engineering, QHSE and other supporting functions to ensure a team-based approach to improvement Setting and achieving operational goals aligned with Site Strategy.
  • Driving performance through the continuous improvement of people, systems and processes.

Cost:

  • Co-ordination, control and reporting of departmental spend on resources (labour, materials and equipment).
  • Developing a manufacturing capacity strategy to determine Capital Equipment budget requirements.
  • Focus on reduction of Waste. Ensure factors related to wasted resources (labour, product or materials) are identified and solutions organised in order to minimise costs.

People:

  • To agree objectives for the Operations Teams that will deliver profitable growth.
  • Regularly appraise, continuously develop and agree personal objectives of all those who are direct reports.
  • Provide employees with the opportunity to contribute to continuous improvement activities and ensure that their inputs are acted upon.
  • Ensure each team has individual employee skills matrices, skills gaps are identified and multi-skilling takes place to remove skills gaps. Ensure there are individual development plans in place for all associates and succession plans are in place for future business needs. Identify learning and development opportunities to improve employee capability & business performance.
  • Supporting Direct reports to ensure effective work output is maintained. Coaching staff to implement effective organisation of workload.
  • Routinely monitoring the working environment and communicating effective performance of employees across shifts.
  • Ensure consistent and fair implementation of personnel policies and procedures and report back accordingly. Manage disciplinary issues in accordance with company policy.

Essential Experience, Qualifications and Candidate Attributes Required:

  • Demonstrated Operations Management experience – previous experience managing multi-functional teams and processes to produce a range of products.
  • Relevant degree in Business Management or equivalent.
  • Experience in utilising lean tools to drive forward change management coupled with the ability to lead organisational change within a manufacturing environment. Taking ownership with the ability to deliver project technical knowledge confidently. Detail focussed with the ability to understand a customer’s needs and interpret technical data to recommend solutions. A self – motivated approach with the initiative to seek out new opportunities and improvements without detailed instruction.
  • Have the ability to communicate and engage effectively at all levels with both internal and external stakeholders, collaborate with customers and suppliers to develop products outside of own site’s technical capability.
  • People centric approach to leadership, A collaborator, comfortable working in teams of all sizes and able to integrate well within cross functional teams to support and develop a team to deliver success, the ability to build strong professional relationships. A Positive ‘can-do’ attitude coupled with the ability to remain calm under pressure and influence the views of others. Commercially focussed in approach, Tenacious and results driven with sound business judgement. A multi-tasker and a finisher with personal resilience.
