Overview
 
Our client provides vehicle test, validation and engineering services to customers in the automotive, transport, tyre, petrochemical, defence and security industries.
 
It has a range of test facilities for components and full vehicles. These include varied indoor and outdoor test tracks in the UK and Northern Finland, engine dynamometers, environmental chambers, crash laboratories and advanced emissions chassis dynamometers.
 
 
 
Role & Responsibilities
 
  • Ensure all H&S and quality procedures have been adhered to.
  • Deliver engine hardware, calibration, fuels and additive testing projects for a variety of customers as part of the engineering team
  • Generate engine installation packs and schematics for accurate test bed setups.
  • Identify engine/test delivery faults and lead effective solutions.
  • Processing and validation of engine test data.
  • Analysing engine data and understanding correct trends and causes for concern.
  • Supporting colleagues as required to achieve wider goals.
  • Track project efficiency and maintain project related invoicing.
  • Devise and lead initiatives to reduce waste and optimise efficiency.
  • Develop best working practises and provide training to colleagues.
  • Undertake analysis of results, including statements of conformity or opinions and interpretations.
  • To report, review and provide authorisation of results.
  • Take ownership of multiple engine variants - responsible for technical updates and efficiency improvements.
  • Responsibility of localised work planning and work load.
    
Person Specification
 
Qualifications
  • Automotive/Mechanical Engineering HND, Degree or extensive relevant experience
Experience
  • 3 years minimum experience in an automotive engineering discipline
  • Test bed experience in an automotive testing environment.
  • Excellent understanding of gasoline and diesel engine mechanical fundamentals.
  • Instrumentation experience (thermocouples, pressure transducers etc.).
  • Exposure to test bed controls (PID controls, throttle/speed/torque) together with thorough understanding of how to create test automation procedures/schedules including bespoke script functions
  • Working closely with customer engineering teams to establish and carry out test programs
  • Experience of a wide variety of engine types would be advantageous (Petrol, Diesel, High Performance, Heavy Duty)
 
Skills
  • Understanding of engine fundamentals and materials characteristics.
  • Highly skilled in electrical and mechanical engine issue diagnostics.
  • Use of engine test cell equipment & software including engine dynos, instrumentation and calibration tools.
  • Understanding of emissions measurement equipment including gaseous, and soot based measurements.
  • In depth knowledge of AVL Puma, Horiba Stars and/or Kratzer PA Tools an advantage.
  • Data interpretation, critique and presentation, using Excel and AVL Concerto.
  • Ability to write formal reports using UTAC standard templates.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational, analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Flexibility to travel as and when required
  • Full UK driving licence & own transport (site is not easily assessable via public transport)
  • Willing to undergo a Criminal Disclosure check
