Our global client who is a supplier of mechanical, hydrodynamic, electrical, hydraulic and electronic drive and braking systems is looking for a Senior Mechanical Support Engineer to be based at their Croydon site.

This is a key role in the Engineering team for technical/engineering purposes to provide an additional layer of engineering and technical knowledge, experience and assurance. As well as own engineering tasks, typically this role will review outputs and tasks from the engineering team prior to approval by the Head of Engineering so that their '4 eye' process is robust for all tasks and outputs. This role contributes to the team effort to ensure that the company meet or exceed all customer requirements and deliver all engineering products and services, to quality, to cost, safely and 'on time, in full' (OTIF) in order to achieve targets and standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the business from a Hands On Engineering perspective to include: BoM checks and sign off, condition assessments, job pack creation, engineering changes, concessions, preparation for overhaul projects, preparation for FAIs, fault investigation and diagnosis, warranty claim investigation, problem solving, creating method statements, creating component overhaul instructions, test procedures, conduct material analysis and comparisons, report compilation and reviewing, design tooling, etc.
  • Understand systems to become a 'subject matter expert' (SME) on transmissions, couplers, cooler groups, final drives, and other products, in time.
  • Be accountable for the delivery of your own work and the review and approval of work from other members of the engineering team.
  • To have the ability to review drawings and designs created from reverse or re-engineering projects for mechanical components and systems.
  • Support the Head of Engineering and Quality in setting and upholding the standards.
  • To support junior engineers and workshop fitters across their range of tasks.
  • Assist with training requirements, ensuring the team continue their development in product knowledge, safety, confidence, attitudes, processes; skills, standards, etc.
  • Assist purchasing and quality with supplier selection and assessment.
  • Assist with the improvement, development, implementation and management of engineering processes in safety critical environments.
  • To understand and work within a range of requirements including British/ISO/RISAS standards applicable to mechanical and rail engineering systems.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Experienced engineer with (as a minimum) an HNC/HND qualification (or equivalent) in a mechanically biased engineering discipline.
  • Professional engineering experience, with a good balance of general engineering, reverse engineering, testing, problem solving, technical process writing (method statements, overhaul instructions), condition assessments, technical investigations and task management.
  • Knowledge of various industries ranging from Mobility (Rail and Marine) to the Power Oil and Gas sectors in advantageous.
  • Knowledge of mechanical driveline and connecting products and systems (gearboxes, cardan shafts, highly flexible couplings, rail couplers, cooler groups, etc) is advantageous but not essential.
  • Knowledge/use of CAD packages such as Siemens NX and Autodesk Inventor is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of technical drawings (including BS8888 symbology/ standards), design principles and ability to review design proposals is adavantageous.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Must have a hands-on, flexible, positive, adaptable and proactive approach.
  • Fluent technical and conversational English.
  • Commercial awareness and experience - understanding the impact of engineering actions and decisions on current contracts and future business.
  • Understanding of Production processes.
  • Knowledge of the ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
  • An ability to self-start and self-learn.
  • Team player.
  • Excellent communication skills on a technical level with both internal and external customers.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills, including the ability to work from engineering first principles.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for Mechanical Engineering.
  • IT literate.
