We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry. That's a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Component Integration Engineer / Lead, to be involved in an industry leading, cutting-edge project for a new type of power station.

Job Purpose:

The Component Integration Engineer / Lead will define and develop ways of working within the component development teams and ensure their effective implementation. This also provides opportunities to provide technical input across the different commodity areas and coordinate regulatory engagement through the Mechanical Engineering topic area. This is a broad scope of work with flexibility to proactively identify and implement improvements across the team and demands skills to work broadly across several areas.

This will be delivered through a combination of direct contribution (Engineer role) or through the combination of direct contribution and leadership through delegation and supervision of work packages into the wider team with a more strategic view (Lead Role). The candidate will be assessed for their ability to meet either or both roles through the application process.

Key Results & What Can Be Achieved in The Role:

Engineer Role:

Develop a coherent approach to the generation and documentation of component requirements, evidence, definitions and verification, such that a golden thread is provided through the data and safety case and provide a single source of truth for all product data and attribution.

Development of management system processes, guidance and templates for the component development team

Manage the "Transverse Requirements" which are applied to multiple components or groups of components. Leverage relationships with different functional areas to ensure those requirements are technically appropriate and effective.

Ensure consistent implementation of the ways of working by developing relationships across the component teams and using a combination of guidance, training, oversight and governance.

Deliver a successful GDA Step 3 for Mechanical Engineering by coordinating submissions and ensuring technical consistency between them, providing an interface with the regulators as required. Build a effective working relationship with regulators through collaboration.

Ensure an optimal level of standardisation is employed at all levels in the designs including setting appropriate requirements for components sourced from the supply chain.

Generate creative solutions to challenges, based on a balance and trade off the project drivers, technical and non-technical requirements.

The cross-component team, in which this role will sit, is a pivotal part of the product development, ensuring consistency, standardisation and efficiency across all product development programmes.

Identify and mitigate risks and opportunities in a proactive manner.

Represent the component team and SMR programme on the global stage.

Lead Role:

  • As above, with a greater level of autonomy and ownership,
  • Plus provide technical leadership, generate, and manage programmes, costs & risks.

The Key Selection Criteria:

  1. Mechanical Engineering and Component Design:
  • Hold a high-level understanding of the design of mechanical components such as pressure vessels, tanks, pumps or valves.
  • Understand the whole product development lifecycle and the engineering processes required to deliver optimised solutions in a highly regulated and controlled environment.
  • Have the ability to review and interpret design codes and standards.
  • Understand opportunities for standardisation at all levels of component specification and design

  1. Management System Processes and Systems Engineering:
  • An experience of the use of systems engineering tools and techniques for applications such as requirements management, structured decision making and stakeholder engagement.
  • Interest and capability of following and defining processes and ways of working.

  • Experience of leading and mentoring others, assuming a technical lead role over others both internally and externally to the team.
  • Ability to handle projects that have a high level of ambiguity, with ability to control and provide direction to resolve this ambiguity.

Qualifications & Training:
