Principal Development Engineer

Our client is a market leading innovator in electric technologies with a focus on providing sustainable products to a range of industries such as Automotive, Rail and Industrial. They are currently looking to strengthen their team with the recruitment of a Principal Development Engineer to focus on Noise, Vibration & Harshness, based at their North East site in Gateshead.

This role will provide an opportunity for an experienced Principal Development Engineer to join a truly cutting-edge business who are dedicated to crafting the most sustainable products, all while setting new benchmarks for efficiency in the market. You will also be able to dedicate a significant amount of time to being Project Lead within the Development Team.

About the Principle Development Engineer – Noise, Vibration & Harshness

Reporting into the Chief Development Engineer, the Principal Development Engineer will be responsible for leading the Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH) analysis and testing of motor systems, using various tools and methods such as finite element analysis, modal analysis, acoustic and vibration measurements, to assess and drive the required design to improve the NVH quality of products.

You will also be involved with developing and implementing Noise, Vibration & Harshness toolsets and analysis processes to enable you to propose design solutions for new products to ensure they meet the customer requirements and standards.

Other requirements of the Principle Development Engineer will include:

  • Develop test methodologies for the validation of NVH models such that they can be relied upon as a valid and accurate design tool.
  • Collaborate with design, power electronics and control teams on multi-physics simulation strategy and ongoing product development to ensure that products meet the needs of the customer and any relevant regulation and compliance.
  • Lead 8D and FRACAS processes and help steer the team towards root-cause identification and rectification.
  • Providing mentorship in your specific discipline to more junior members of the team with the potential of direct line management responsibilities.

About You

As Principal Development Engineer, you will be a degree educated Engineer with relevant industrial experience. You will have extensive relevant industrial experience preferably in a high-volume development and production environment, ideally within Automotive. You will be able to contribute technically as an individual, lead projects and mentor other members of the team.

Other requirements of the Principle Development Engineer will include:

  • MEng degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, or other relevant discipline, or a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry.
  • Recognised, advanced technical ability in your own discipline with a broad range of product and multi-disciplinary engineering knowledge.
  • Knowledge of sources of noise within motor and powertrain systems such as rotor balance, bearings, gears, body structures, mounting and motor control.
  • Experienced in NVH analysis and modelling toolsets with the ability to select appropriate software and hardware.
  • A working knowledge of electromagnetics and motor control theory is desirable.
