Principal Development Engineer

Our client is a market leading innovator in electric technologies with a focus on providing sustainable products to a range of industries such as Automotive, Rail and Industrial. They are currently looking to strengthen their team with the recruitment of a Principal Development Engineer – Motor Drives, based at their North East site in Gateshead.

You will also be able to dedicate a significant amount of time to being Project Lead within the Development Team.

About the Principle Development Engineer – Motor Drives

Reporting into the Chief Development Engineer, the Principal Development Engineer will be responsible for leading electromagnetic analysis and optimisation and the ongoing development of electromagnetic and system modelling of motors and power systems.

You will also work with other teams to contribute to the overall multi-physics simulation toolset development strategy and roadmaps.

Other requirements of the Principle Development Engineer - Motor Droves will include:

  • Creation and modification of 2D and 3D, static and transient electromagnetic finite element models for the analysis and optimisation of all aspects of motors for new designs and customisations.
  • Develop and use a system simulation tool to accurately model motors and motor performance, assist in the development of motor control and to optimise the electromagnetic design to meet specific requirements.
  • Developing test methodologies for the validation of electromagnetic and system models such that they can be relied upon as a valid and accurate design tool.
  • Collaborate with design, power electronics and control teams on multi-physics simulation strategy and ongoing product development to ensure that our products meet the needs of the customer and any relevant regulation and compliance.
  • Lead 8D and FRACAS processes and help steer the team towards root-cause identification and rectification.

About You

As Principal Development Engineer, you will be a degree educated Engineer with relevant industrial experience. You will have extensive relevant industrial experience preferably in a high-volume development and production environment, ideally within Automotive. You will be able to contribute technically as an individual, lead projects and mentor other members of the team.

Other requirements of the Principle Development Engineer - Motor Drives will include:

  • MEng degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, or other relevant discipline, or a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry.
  • Recognised, advanced technical ability in your own discipline with a broad range of product and multi-disciplinary engineering knowledge.
  • Vast knowledge of electromagnetic design theory of multi-phase machines, coupled with experience in the use and creation of 2D and 3D, static and transient electromagnetic finite element modelling of electrical machines, and model validation with real lab-based data.
  • Experienced in the creation and validation of dynamic system models for motors, motor control and hardware in packages such as Matlab for the development and optimisation of electromagnetic designs and motor control algorithms.
  • A working knowledge of inverter hardware and thermodynamics as pertain to electric machines is desirable.
