What does the role look like?

As an R&D Manufacturing Technician, your primary responsibility will be to manufacture composite hardware of varying complexity. This role presents an exciting and diverse workload, involving tasks such as robot-assisted filament winding, braiding, and resin transfer molding (RTM) to support the research and development efforts of the business. This position offers a fantastic opportunity to join a company at a pivotal juncture in its research and development department.

What will your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

  • Manufacture composite components through filament winding, utilizing either a wet resin system or prepreg.
  • Manufacture composite components using braiding and RTM technology, including mold preparation and setup.
  • Conduct thorough analyses of composite materials and components, identifying: Volume Fraction, Void Content, Glass Transition Temperature
  • Assist in the assembly of test parts through the use of mechanical and adhesive fastening techniques.
  • Ensure comprehensive documentation and reporting of findings from Design of Experiments (DOE) and experiments to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate proactively with the team to contribute to the development and refinement of new products and processes.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work environment, adhering to good housekeeping practices, and conducting 5S inspections.
  • Always work within the requirements of COSHH and company safety regulations, identifying and rectifying hazards when possible.
  • Provide support for continuous improvement initiatives through active participation in lean events, workshops, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Develop and produce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for personal use and for training others.

What will you bring to the role?

Essential skills:

  • Possession of an engineering qualification, such as an apprenticeship, would be advantageous.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to use one's own initiative are essential.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally operating rotary machinery and/or robotics, is preferred.

Desirable skills:  

  • Possess experience in operating rotating machinery, covering setup, running, and clean-down procedures.
  • Demonstrate the aptitude and eagerness to develop programming skills for job-specific programs.
  • Previous hands-on experience in processing polymer matrix composites.
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving techniques and the ability to work independently with a logical and systematic approach.
  • Proficient in computer skills, with a robust working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Essential skills in Word and Excel are crucial for this role.
  • Knowledge and experience in continuous improvement/lean activities.
  • Capability to adhere to and author standards and specific instructions.
  • Experience using filament winding programs, including CADfil.
  • Proficiency in molding processes.
  • Formal qualification from KUKA Robotics (Programming 1 KRC4 or equivalent) and hands-on experience in operating KUKA robots.
