We’re supporting our client, a leading equipment manufacturer of safety critical components based in Birmingham, who are looking for a Design Engineer to join their growing team. The successful Design Engineer will have experience of generating 3D models following on to 2D drawings for production and purchasing.

Position Overview: As a Design Engineer, you will apply your technical and design skills to all stages of manufacture and assembly to ensure designs meet performance, cost and reliability requirements. Working across new product development, continuous improvement and production support will require attention to detail and a result focused approach. They key attribute for this role is an ability to work in a multi-disciplined team with a focus on delivering accurate designs on-time and on-quality.

Responsibilities for:

  • Generate 3D models following on to 2D drawings for production and purchasing.
  • Develop outline concept models, independently or with customer engineers, supported by necessary calculations and system schematics, and achieve sign off prior to detail design.
  • Provide input at concept development to ensure designs can progress through detail design without issues.
  • Identify all the activities required to complete the design, generating individual timing plans to track progress.
  • Conduct basic calculations for new projects, for the correct validation / specification of components.
  • Ensure that the 3D modelling captures all relevant detail to allow effective design reviews across departments.
  • Take ownership of detail design development to meet performance, and reliability requirements within cost and manufacturing constraints.
  • Support production engineers and departments to investigate and resolve manufacturing issues.
  • Provide technical and design support to the purchasing and quality departments to reduce cost and improve reliability.
  • Maintain clear records of issues, details, actions and changes to support successful product development.

About You:

  • An Engineering degree or HND with demonstrable experience.
  • You have a minimum of 5 years of experience in this type of industry.
  • You have experience using SolidWorks or similar in a work environment.
  • Industry experience in a mechanical engineering & manufacturing environment .
  • 3D CAD competence, concept design and manufacturing process awareness.
  • Drawing and document control, internally and externally.
  • ERP/MRP process & application awareness.
  • It would be advantageous to have thermal, HVAC or refrigeration experience
