NRL have an exciting new opportunity for a Lead Design Manager, to work with one of our clients who do work in the civil nuclear industry. This would be based in Capenhurst, Cheshire.

About the role:
  • To set the overall technical direction for complex multi-disciplinary projects and act as a key decision maker, ensuring a suitable balance between all potentially conflicting drivers is achieved.
  • To oversee the development of design delivery schedules, ensuring all relevant disciplines are accounted for, and to manage the interface between these disciplines throughout the design development.
  • To represent the project from a technical perspective at key stakeholder meetings, having overall oversight of the basis for key design decisions, and a detailed understanding of the technical position of the project.
  • To maintain oversight of the design managers who report into you.
  • Accountable for the identification of proportionate and appropriate design solutions
  • Accountable for ensuring appropriate stakeholder engagement in projects
  • Ensuring a balanced approach between engineering disciplines is achieved.
  • Ensuring logical, achievable, integrated cross-discipline schedules are developed.
  • Accountable for monitoring delivery of the technical aspects of projects in line with the agreed scope and schedule. Ensuring any deviance is appropriately justified, understood and managed.
  • Accountable for prioritizing where conflicts of resource exist, based on an understanding of the impact on design development
  • Ensuring configuration control throughout the project lifecycle
  • Accountable for ensuring CAD support is available to support the project requirements
What you will need:
  • Degree in relevant Engineering discipline.
  • Chartered member of a relevant Engineering Institute.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the management and development of complex design packages
  • Experience of leading teams to deliver technical packages of work.
  • Good cross discipline technical knowledge and appreciation.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience applying robust engineering processes, ideally within the nuclear industry.
  • Thorough appreciation of international and UK standards, legislation and regulations relating to engineering and design.
  • Sound knowledge of current health and safety legislation.
  • Excellent IT skills, including Windows and Microsoft applications, Documentation and SAP.
  • Ability to maintain and develop own technical knowledge to ensure the best, cost effective and safe solutions are proposed and implemented.
  • Skilled in exercising authority in the control of contractors and suppliers.
