Essex Highways are seeking an enthusiastic and capable Streetworks Inspector to join a large streetworks team who can support you in an exciting, progressive career in a fulfilling industry.

Job Description

The Streetworks team are responsible for ensuring Essex Highways meets its obligations under the New Roads & Street Works Act and in the effective delivery of the Essex Permit Scheme. Ensuring compliance with regulations, codes of practice and local procedures. The successful candidate will co-ordinate works and other activities on the highway network, as well as protecting the highway asset and minimising delays and disruption to highway users.

Streetworks Inspectors are responsible for carrying out inspections of utility companies, contractors and other 3rd parties working on the Essex highway network. Inspectors are required to make accurate records of those inspections and findings so that utility companies and other 3rd parties and their contractors can complete remedial repairs.

Our inspectors use handheld devices to receive and record inspections.

The Role

  • Responsible for carrying out inspections and recording the condition of the public highway to ensure it is maintained to a standard acceptable to the Highways Authority.
  • Responsible for raising defects using data capture devices to enable the delivery teams or utilities to plan and prioritise work accordingly, in line with company policy.
  • Monitoring and supervise highway work undertaken by contractors or utilities to ensure compliance with specification, safety, legislation, and objectives of Essex Highways.
  • Intervening and instructing an immediate response where imminent and significant dangers are identified. Responsible for inspecting and reporting on suitability of sites for issue of Statutory Licences.
  • Responsible for providing advice, guidance and information to stakeholders, partners, and customers. Responding to complaints, including guiding customers if no action is to be taken.
  • Responsible for identifying sites of accident claims, checking works history and specification for safety compliance.
  • Preparing documentation and attending court hearings to give evidence as a professional witness, to enable decisions to be fully informed.
  • Undertake Sample, Defect, S74’s, skips, scaffoldings, hoardings and crane licences, to deliver the Street Works function in conformance with National and Local key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Liaise with the Public Utility companies to discuss their programme of work and attending site meetings to discuss Reinstatement defaults.

About You

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability communicate with members of the public, stakeholders, utility companies and their contractors.
  • Apply a systematic and logical approach to get things right.
  • Experience of dealing with members of the public and dealing with compliments and complaints.
  • Conversant with modern IT packages including Microsoft applications – Word, Excel and Teams.
  • Good written and verbal communication, organisational and interpersonal skills (including report and document writing).
  • Full driving licence
  • Possesses an NRSWA accreditation Supervisor Certificate
