Job Description

The Data Centre Engineer role within the Data Centre Infrastructure and Operations team is a role that is based in OCB (Operations Centre Basingstoke) and could involve some limited travel to other Visa locations. �

The shift engineer role requires working a rotating 12 hr day and night shifts providing 24x7 support for all hardware installed in the data centre. The role involves managing the planning, installation, and movement of modern high-end computer, network hardware and security equipment within the data halls and includes installation and support of the cabling systems and troubleshooting of hardware and cabling issues. There is also an element of rack and supporting infrastructure physical installation. The role also requires working on and providing support to internal projects.�

This is a physical hands-on role and requires the use of several IT software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite; with intermediate knowledge of Outlook, Teams, Excel and Power Point. �Data Centre �

Infrastructure Management (DCIM) applications, Hardware Asset Inventory, Service Now (AskNow) and other various business-related applications.�

Responsibilities�

To manage the installation and support of server, storage, network and security hardware and associated cable infrastructures housed in the Data Centre.�

Management of people access requests and equipment deliveries at Basingstoke Data Centres. Includes creating delivery forms and informing security.�

To assist with maintaining the data for Nlyte asset management data base ensuring all assets are properly recorded. This includes asset tagging and raising Nlyte workflows, updating tickets in Ask Now so that new kit, hardware changes and decommissioned kit gets recorded correctly.�

To maintain the accuracy of the content of the environment management tool (Nlyte) database. Use of the Nlyte tool to locate devices in the event of an incident or referring to Nlyte when installing kit to ensure it is installed in the �planned� location.�

Provide support for hardware and cabling related problems in the Data Centres. Use knowledge, experience and co-ordinate with vendors and support teams to resolve all problems in a timely manner, in accordance with Visa�s change & incident management processes. This includes monitoring the Ask Now queues and escalating to management when there are incidents that are major or cannot be resolved in a timely manner, with all records updated to a high standard.�

When performing cable installation works, will be required to ensure labelling of all cables. This will require use of the Label Mark labelling software. All cabling schedules are normally provided in Excel spreadsheet format which can be used to �import� the label info. Use of Excel is an essential part of the role. �

When installing new hardware will require to label all new devices with hostnames which will require the use of Dymo or Brother labelling machines�

Supervise and co-ordinate vendor work schedules and reactive vendor visits to ensure the hardware preventative maintenance schedules and hardware incidents are completed on time and in accordance with Visa�s change control system and local procedures. This would include raising changes and access requests to support work that Data Centre Team have arranged or are primary co-ordinators. �

Supervise, co-ordinate the vendor engineers and manage the provision, installation and commissioning of all Host and mid-range systems which assist in providing continuous availability of all Visa systems/services. �

In consultation with vendors and internal departments (mainly capacity planning) assists in ensuring that the Data Centre is positioned to be able to accommodate future growth.�

Establish working relationship with both technical support and project teams for all Data Centre activity.�

Management and stock control of all IT assets within the Data Centre facility. This includes managing stock levels of cables, stationary and any other specific consumables managed by Data Centre Services team.�

The duty shift engineer will be responsible for completing a handover at the start and end of every shift (This activity normally 30-20mins before commencement of shift.) �

The duty engineer will be responsible for completing the daily checks during their shift � these are detailed in Sharepoint and each item will require an update in Sharepoint�

The duty day shift engineer is responsible for preparing for daily meeting by checking Ask Now incident queues for incidents. Also referencing the team turnover for activities scheduled during their shift and for the next 24 hours � there are standard reports in Ask Now that can be viewed. �

Working closely with the data centre planning team and assist when formally requested in planning activities, Changes or RITMS. �

Engineers are responsible for health and safety of themselves and others and are required to wear the correct PPE as identified in risk assessments and method statements.�

Engineers are responsible for ensuring compliance with all health and safety requirements and carry out any allocated training in a timely manner. �

The duty shift engineer is ultimately responsible for all activities in the data centre during their shift � any concerns to be escalated to management immediately. �

Engineers are responsible for reviewing all planned changes and assessing the planned date to ensure on site cover and assessing the risk of the activity. If cover available and acceptable risk of the change, then they should approve in Ask Now � Duty engineer is responsible for ensuring all planned changes are approved or if not, comfortable approving then escalating to management.�

Deciding priorities � As a guide the order of priority is:�

INCIDENT TICKETS � In order of severity (These show on the Incident queue)�

CHANGE TICKETS�

REQUESTS (These also show on the RITM queue and normally have target dates)�

Audits � we regularly have requirements to audit various items and provide information to auditors.�

Interfacing and working closely with facilities team who are responsible for mechanical and electrical infrastructure in the data centre. �

Reporting incidents that you discover.�

Responsibility for site security by adhering to all security processes and reporting any concerns.�

Responsibility for participating in Security Key Ceremonies ensuring Visa Secret data is always secured.�
