Apsley Precision Engineering is a well established supplier of precision machined components to the Defence, Medical, Aerospace, and Pharmaceutical industries holding ISO9001 and AS9100 Rev D certification. A new position for an Engineering Manager has been created as our management team develops to support the growth in clients and business.
Apsley have continually invested in new machinery and expertise, leading to new equipment purchases of just under £1M in the last two years. The business employs 24 and offers, 3, 4 and 5 axis machining, multi-axis turning and toolroom capabilities, and manages a host of sub-contract suppliers to provide our clients with complete and comprehensive machining solutions.
Our CNC Milling department operates, Matsuura, Fanuc Robodrill, Brother and Haas CNC machines with up to 5 axis simultaneous movement. The CNC turning department has barfed Doosan and Miyano machines for billet and bar work with single spindle, single turret machines up to twin spindle twin turret driven tooling machines. The toolroom operates a range of manual and semi-cnc XYZ machines.
Job Description – Operations Manager
A pivotal role within the business is being created for an experienced Operations Manager. This new role puts you at the centre of Apsleys management activities. You will be reporting directly to the MD and working to support sales activities, assist in procurement, project management, quality and ensuring the specification of, and smooth running of, production activities.
This is a new role will allow you to develop in accordance with your experience. You will be expected to have enough experience to understand the requirements of all aspects of the business including quoting, purchasing, manufacturing, and quality requirements associated with the manufacture of machined components.
You will also be expected to have particular strengths in supporting the technical aspects of planning and manufacturing components, and be suitably experienced to offer the lead on production methodology. Reporting on KPI’s and budgets and ensuring profitability for the business and on individual contracts will be expected.
This is a senior position; however, the company encourages any applicant with the correct experience, drive, ambition and focus to apply for the role. Previous experience in a management role is required, however it is essential that you have a broad understanding of CNC manufacturing methodology and machine capabilities, with this in mind, “hands on” experience would be a significant benefit.
- Overall daily management of approximately 20 staff, including the Production Manager, Chief Inspector, CNC Programmers, skilled setters/operators and general machinists. These include a core team of around 5 personal who are technical experts in their areas.
- Ensuring the efficient running of machines and work load of operators to maximise production output.
- Ensuring all staff complete production paperwork correctly.
- Dealing with technical issues, directly or with the support of the MD.
- Highlighting and implementing areas for improvement, in processes or organisation.
- Supporting the allocation of work to individuals according to the schedule and monitoring their progress.
- Assessing the training requirements of staff and encouraging progress through mentoring or specific training.
- Help lead continuous improvement initiatives.
- Using the MRP system to ensure the smooth running of production.
- Awareness of any quality issues and working with QA to resolve these including supporting root cause analysis.
- Pro-actively managing bottlenecks in the system.
- Close communication with the Managing Director, Production Manager and Chief Inspector prioritising and identifying changing priorities.

Applicants will be assessed on their experience and abilities in the following areas:
Experience of managing a CNC machining department.
Modern process experience including automation, 5 axis machining, twin spindle turning, C & Y axis machining on lathes etc.
Ability to read complex technical /engineering drawings with a good understanding of tolerances.
CNC turning experience including programming.
CNC milling experience including programming.
5 Axis machining experience including programming.
CADCAM programming, in particular Edgecam.
Design of jigs and fixtures.
Comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing techniques for component manufacture, not limited to those employed within the company.
Ability to demonstrate original thinking and an innovative approach to problem solving, from top-level concept to component detail.
The achievement of output targets including delivery, quality and productivity.
Effective Management of workload against capacity.
Conducting team meeting, reviews and disciplinary proceedings.
Knowledge and understanding of sub-contracted operations, including the ability to culture and develop good working relationships.
Experience working with ISO9001 is essential
Experience working with AS9100 is preferred
Understand drawing specific quality requirements and be able to advise member of staff on expectations and inspection methodology.
Managing and resolving customer quality issues throughout the production process.
Developing new client relationships
Preparation of production documents, including quotations, BOM’s, manufacturing methodology, tooling requirements, subcontractor requirements.
Identifying and qualifying existing and new suppliers
Working with clients on technical issues and offering guidance and design for manufacture advise.
Understanding and maintain H&S and welfare of employees.
Excellent knowledge of engineering machining practices and confidence and ability to direct employees in the application of this.
