Job Description

Who are we looking for?

We have the opportunity for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to join our Building Services Engineering Group (BSEG) on a permanent basis.

The Mechanical Systems for which the BSEG is responsible provide key and critical services to UKAEA Fusion Research, including systems for personnel safety, radiological protection, and operation of the two Tokamaks at the Culham site.

The diversity and range of these systems and the work that they support provide variety and more than the occasional challenge, requiring flexibility, adaptability, and an enthusiasm for determining how things work.

To be successful as the Mechanical Engineering Technician you will have knowledge and experience of working with industrial mechanical systems, such as heating and cooling plant, hydraulic systems, and ventilation systems. Due to the nature of the work you will also need to have a high level understanding of Written Safe Systems of Work (RAMS etc) and to be able to read and interpret Engineering Drawings.

You will also require good organisation and communication skills to be able to effectively organise and supervise a small team, providing detailed work plans.

What will you be responsible for?

  • Supervision of in-house mechanical tradespersons, with responsibilities for Safety and Standards.
  • Assisting with the development of the Group's Apprentice trainees.
  • Writing Risk Assessments and Method Statements for assigned work packages.
  • Hold toolbox talks and pre-work briefs with in-house personnel.
  • Maintain the Group's Risk Assessments with regards to PUWER, including HAVS Risk Assessments.
  • Co-ordination, liaison and monitoring of external contractors working on UKAEA systems, including review of Contractor RAMS in line with UKAEA processes and procedures.
  • Working independently and taking full responsibility for the delivery of assigned work packages.

Please note:

There is a requirement to work in active areas, with hazardous materials, and at height. There is an occasional requirement to be available to work extended hours/weekends.
