Capstan Setter/Operator

Overview:

We are seeking a skilled Capstan Setter experienced in operating Ward and Herbert machines, utilizing Landis or Coventry die heads, Fette rollers, and broaching techniques to produce precision fasteners from exotic materials. The ideal candidate will be proficient in quality inspection methods, including the use of micrometers, verniers, and shadow graphs. This role requires meticulous attention to detail and the ability to interpret engineering drawings accurately.

Responsibilities:

  1. Set up and operate Ward and Herbert machines for the production of precision fasteners.
  2. Utilize Landis or Coventry die heads, Fette rollers, and broaching techniques as required for specific fastener designs and materials.
  3. Interpret engineering drawings to determine specifications, dimensions, and tolerances for fastener production.
  4. Perform first-off and last-off inspections to ensure adherence to quality standards.
  5. Conduct in-process inspections to verify dimensional accuracy and surface finish of fasteners.
  6. Use micrometers, verniers, shadow graphs, and other precision measurement tools for quality inspection.
  7. Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain optimal production efficiency and product quality.
  8. Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during production, such as tool wear or material inconsistencies.
  9. Collaborate with engineering and quality control teams to implement process improvements and ensure continuous quality enhancement.
  10. Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Qualifications:

  1. Proven experience as a Capstan Setter or similar role in a manufacturing environment, preferably in precision machining.
  2. Proficiency in setting up and operating Ward and Herbert machines.
  3. Familiarity with Landis or Coventry die heads, Fette rollers, and broaching techniques.
  4. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  5. Strong understanding of materials and their machining properties, particularly exotic materials used in fastener production.
  6. Experience performing quality inspections using micrometers, verniers, shadow graphs, and other measurement tools.
  7. Excellent attention to detail and precision in workmanship.
  8. Effective problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot machine issues independently.
  9. Good communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
  10. Commitment to safety standards and best practices in a manufacturing environment.

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Vocational training or apprenticeship in machining or related field preferred.
  • Additional certifications in machining or quality control are a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating machinery and performing inspections.
