Commercial Manager / Managing Quantity Surveyor (QS)

Overview:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Commercial Manager/Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead the commercial aspects of a significant £100m rail project in Bristol. This project encompasses multiple disciplines including rail systems, civil engineering, and infrastructure works. As the Commercial Manager, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the project's commercial success, overseeing all financial and contractual aspects, and managing a team of Quantity Surveyors of varying levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take full accountability for all commercial aspects of the £100m rail project, including cost management, budgeting, procurement, and contract administration.
  • Lead and manage a team of approximately 6-8 Quantity Surveyors, providing guidance, support, and mentorship as necessary.
  • Implement effective commercial strategies to optimize project profitability and mitigate risks.
  • Liaise closely with project stakeholders, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure compliance with contractual agreements and project specifications.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports, forecasts, and cost assessments for senior management and clients.
  • Collaborate with the Divisional Commercial Director or Senior Commercial Manager to align project objectives with overall company goals and strategies.
  • Ensure strict adherence to the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) form of Contract throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Proactively identify and resolve commercial issues, variations, and claims to minimize project delays and disputes.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the commercial team.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Professional accreditation (e.g., MRICS) is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in a senior commercial role, preferably within the rail or infrastructure sector.
  • Strong understanding of contract management principles and experience working with the ICE form of Contract.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performing team.
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects with tight deadlines and budgets.
  • Experience working on major rail projects or within the infrastructure sector is advantageous.
